The dossier on one of Sydney's best-kept secrets. What's the story? Josh McPherson and Andrew Byrne were uni friends in Brisbane who went their separate ways to work in furniture design, and law and magazine publishing respectively. A couple of years ago they met up again, got talking and realised they were both after a change. The result was menswear store The Cloakroom, which opened in Brisbane's CBD in 2007. In August this year, they unveiled their pop-up store in Surry Hills, featuring suits and shirts from the duo's Pistols at Dawn label. What's popular? The two-button, single-vented jacket, modelled on Michael Caine's look in the 1971 movie Get Carter, is The Cloakroom's stock-in-trade. "Our jackets are lightweight, with half-lining and soft shoulders," says McPherson. Why do we like it?With an oak bar lined with stools, a huge ottoman and classic pushbikes decorating the space, The Cloakroom is as much gentlemen's club as clothing store. Where do you find it? 47 Reservoir Street, Surry Hills. Phone: 9212 0029.
